Hiking across the Alpe d’Huez area

All these pathes, and some other itineraries are described in a guide (you can buy it at the Tourist Office).

1 – Col du Lac Blanc *

Start: DMC 2700m, or cable car in Vaujany
Finish: 2800m
Length: 2 km – Duration: 1h00

Climb up to the Dôme des Petites Rousses on the 4×4 road.
View on the lakes la Fare and le Milieu, and on the Pic Blanc too.


2 – La Face des Rousses **

Start: 2700m
Finish: 1860m
Length: 6.7 km – Duration: 2h00

Walk along the moutain bike area, from 2700m until the resort. Discovery of the Alpine Garden and of the lake Blanc.


3 – Refuge du Vallon de la Fare ***

Start: DMC 2700m
Finish: 2043m
Length: 4.5 km – Duration: 3h00

View on the lakes le Milieu and la Fare, pedestrian path reaching l’Alpette.


4 – La Combe Charbonnière ***

Start: DMC 2700m
Finish: 1806m
Length: 8.7 km – Duration: 2h30

Walk on a road 4×4 in the direction of the lac Blanc, the Clocher de Mâcle, the Combe Charbonnière, the road of La Mine. Finish at Les Bergers.


5 – La Ronde des lacs **

Start: DMC 2100m
Finish: 2100m
Length: 9 km – Duration: 2h30

Walk round trip in the direction of l’Alpette, on a pedestrian path along the lake Besson, the lake Noir, the lake Faucille, the lake Carrelet.


6 – Le plateau de Montfrais **

Start: DMC 2100m
Finish: 1250m
Length: 6.5 km – Duration: 2h00

Descent on a road 4×4 in the direction of the plateau de Montfrais and Vaujany village. View on the lake Carrelet, la Villette, Vaujany.


7 – La Combe de Poutran **

Start: 2100m
Finish: 1350m
Length: 5.3 km – Duration: 1h00

Descent until Oz resort on a road 4×4 across the Combe de Poutran. View on the massifs of Belledonne and Taillefer, Eau d’Olle and the Romanche valleys. Return by the gondola lift of Poutran.


8 – Les Alpages **

Start: 1860m
Finish: 1775m
Length: 11 km – Duration: 4h00

Rise to Le Signal by a road 4×4. View on the massifs of Belledonne and Taillefer and on the Romanche valley. Then, descent across the mountain pastures until Villard-Reculas. Return back to Huez par the road of Villard. Return back to Alpe d’Huez by the televillage.


9 – La Voie Romaine *

Start: 1860m
Finish: 1470m
Length: 2.5 km – Duration: 30 minutes

Under the televillage, a pedestrian path goes down until Huez crossing an old Roman way. View on the massifs of Belledonne and Taillefer, and on the Romanche valley. Return by the televillage.


10 – Col de Sarenne *

Start: 1860m
Finish: 1775m
Length: 13.5 km – Duration: 4h00

From the Altiport, take the road in direction of the col de Sarenne, until the Sarenne bridge. View on the Signal de l’Homme and the col de Cluy. Then follow Pont du Gua, and walk across the undergrowth along the Sarenne river until Huez village. Return by the televillage.


11 – Tour du Signal de l’Homme ***

Start: 1470m
Finish: 1450m
Length: 19 km – Duration: 5h00

From Huez village, take the road 4×4 in the direction of the gorges de Sarenne. Then follow Sarenne bridge, Hameau du Rosay, Les Orgières, Hameau du Puit, the col de Cluy, the chapel Saint Giraud. Return back to Huez by the gorges, walking across the undergrowth along the Sarenne river.

12 – Crossing the « Ravin de la Balme »**

Start: 2110 m
Finish: 1450 m
Duration: 2h00

From the DMC at 2100 m, cross to Les Bergers. Arrival at the top of « La Bergerie du Poutrat Ravin de la Balme » to reach « Pierre Ronde » and go down until « Le Gua ». Botanical path. Go on until Huez. Back to Alpe d’Huez by the « télévillage ».

13 – Panoramic foot path**

Start: 1860 m
Finish: 1450 m
Duration: 2h00

Leaving the Saint Laurent outside car park (at the sharp curve after the Alpe d’Huez town hall), follow the way up to the 1st of the 21 legendary bends of the road to Alpe d’Huez, reach Villard Reculas going down through the meadows. Back to Huez by the road. Back to Alpe d’Huez by the « télévillage ».
